His Eminence, the Most Reverend Jonah (Lwanga) of Kampala and All Uganda is Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala and All Uganda in central Africa, part of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa.

Life

In 1945, Archbishop Jonah was born into an Orthodox family in Degeya, Uganda, the grandson of Father Obadiah Kabanda Basajakitalo. He completed his pre-college level education in Bulemezi and Kyaddondo, Uganda in 1964, before continuing his studies at the Ecclesiastical School of Crete. Completing his education in Crete, he studied Theology and Philosophy at the University of Athens, earning his degree in 1978.

He was ordained a deacon in 1981 and a priest in 1982. During the next ten years he served under Archbishop Anastasios Yannoulatos in Kenya as dean of the Archbishop Makarios III Patriarchal Seminary. During this time Fr. Jonah was elevated to archimandrite. On July 26, 1992, he was consecrated Orthodox Bishop of Bukoba, Tanzania, by Pope and Patriarch Petros VII of Alexandria. On May 12, 1997, he succeeded the late Metropolitan Theodoros Nankyamas as Archbishop of Kampala and All Uganda.

During 1999, His Eminence Jonah made a lecture tour in the United States in which he described his experiences and struggles as a missionary in Uganda. He visited over 18 parishes throughout the United States.
