Metropolitan James (Kapenekas) of Skythopolis, also Jacob or Iakovos, is the bishop of the see of Skythopolis in Palestine under the jurisdiction of the Church of Jerusalem.

Life

George Kapenekas was born in 1921 in Mytilini on Samos in Greece. George moved to Jerusalem in 1939, but returned to Greece to study theology at the School of Theology of the University of Athens.

In 1943, George was tonsured a monk with the name James and received ordination as a deacon. In 1954, he was ordained a priest and subsequently was raised to the dignity of archimandrite. He served in the positions of librarian, teacher, and principal in the patriarchal schools. From 1954 to 1970, Fr. James served as director of the patriarchal journal “New Sion”. In 1971, Archim. James represented the Jerusalem Patriarchate at the Inter-Orthodox Conference in Addis Ababa.
