History

  • The first Russian parish established in Australia and New Zealand was St. Nicholas Church (now Cathedral), Brisbane, in 1926.
  • The first ROCOR bishop of Australia and New Zealand was Bp Theodore (Rafalsky), 1948-55.

Organisation

The Diocese of Australia and New Zealand is a diocese within the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. Within the diocese, of which the Archbishop is the head and sole bishop, there are various deans who are in charge of one or more states. There are 24 parishes and communities, along with 6 monasteries and sketes across Australia, as well as 4 parishes and communities in New Zealand, and one mission-church in South Korea.

The Diocese of Australia and New Zealand of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia was a founding member of SCCOCA, but later departed.

Recent History

In February 2005 His Grace Archbishop Hilarion received into the Diocese clergy and parishioners of the Indonesian Orthodox Church who were formerly under the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia (Ecumenical Patriarchate), and there are now a growing number of parishes and mission centres scattered throughout Indonesia.

The Diocese of Australia and New Zealand, as a part of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, is involved in the process to reenter communion with the Church of Russia.[1][2] The majority of laity and clergy in Australia support reunion with Moscow. However a small minority are opposed to reunion and are demanding substantial concessions from Moscow despite the manifest visible changes and public declarations of the Church in Russia, now free from state control, since the fall of the Soviet Union.[3]

On September 6, 2006 The Synod of Bishops of ROCOR decreed their confirmation and approval of the revised Act of Canonical Unity and instructed the Commission on Discussion with the Moscow Patriarchate to work jointly with the Moscow Patriarchate to work out details of the official signing of the Act. [4] Subsequently on September 11, 2006 The Synod of Bishops of ROCOR published on ROCOR's website a clarification of their decision to confirm and approve the Act. [5] Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia acknowledged the work of the commissions and declared that the act of reunification, while moving in the right direction, will take time. [6]

Both the Moscow Patriarchate and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia published on their respective websites the final full text of the Act of Canonical Unity [7] with all relevant supporting documents [8] [9] on November 1, 2006. The Act having been approved by both the Moscow Patriarchate and ROCOR, all that remains left for each to do is work out the confirmation and enactment, which is expected to take place sometime in 2007.
