His Eminence Daniel (Nushiro) of Japan, Archbishop of Tokyo, Metropolitan of All Japan, is the current primate of the Church of Japan. Prior to his election as Archbishop of Tokyo Bp. Daniel was Bishop of Kyoto.
His Eminence Daniel was born as Ikuo Nushiro in Toyohashi, Aichi, in mid-Japan on September 5, 1938. He was graduated in French literature from Aichi University in 1962. He studied at Nicholai Seminary in Tokyo from 1962 till 1965 and St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary from 1965 till 1969.
In November 1969, he was ordained as deacon. From 1970 he served as deacon in Holy Resurrection Cathedral (Tokyo, Japan). In 1972 he was ordained as priest and appointed to the parish of Toyohashi, his birthplace.
He married but lost his wife by death. As a priest in his widowhood, he became a monk on August 20, 1999, and since then known as Father Daniel. In the same year he was promoted respectively and on November 14, he was ordained as bishop, and Bp. Daniel was appointed to the bishop of Kyoto and Western Japan.
In 1999, after the death of Metropolitan Theodosius (Nagashima), Bp. Daniel was elected to his successor, as Archbishop of Tokyo and Metropolitan of All Japan.
His Eminence is a devout student of Church Fathers, specially Greek and Russian authors. For believers he has written several brochures about their teachings in Japanese.
