Cathedral is the English term commonly used for churches that are the seat of a bishop's see. The word cathedral comes from the Greek word καθέδρα (cathedra) or seat, referring to the bishop's chair, as head of the diocese. Sobor (собор) is the name generally used for the bishop's church within Slavic language countries. Cathedrals are often large buildings, usually basilicas.
