His Eminence Bassian or Vassian of Kazan was Archbishop of the Diocese of Kazan of the Church of Russia for only three months during the year 1575, having reposed in office soon after his enthronement.

Life

Little is known of Archbishop Bassian's life. Before his assignment to the see of Kazan, he was abbot at the Ipatiev Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Kostroma from 1558/1559 to 1566 and an archimandrite at the Moscow New Savior Monastery from 1571. In 1572, Archim. Bassian participated in a council that approved, with conditions, the marriage of Tsar Ivan IV (the Terrible) to Anna Koltovskaya, his fourth.

On February 14, 1575, Archim. Bassian was consecrated the Archbishop of Kazan, a tenure that lasted only four months. He died on May 21, 1575 and was buried at the north wall of Kazan's Annunciation Cathedral.
