The first Russian Orthodox churches in New Zealand were established in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in the 1950s by Mitred Archpriest Alexey Gavrilovitch Godyaew

Born 8 February 1900 Bolshaya Utcha, Russia.

Married Anna Muhlen in Paris in 1930.

Died at home 19 March 1991.

Father's Name: Gavriil Godyaew.

Mother's Name: Antonina Godyaew nee Bargina.

Buried at Waikanae Cemetery.

Fr Alexey travelled extensively pastoring the parishes until his retirement.
