His Eminence Agathangelos of Ephesus was the Metropolitan of Ephesus under the jurisdiction of the Church of Constantinople from 1872 to 1895. He participated in the activities of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate including as the patriarchal locum tenens.

Life

Agathangelos was born in Magnesia, modern Manisa, of Asia Minor in 1818. Little is known of his life before he was ordained a deacon, in 1836, at the age of eighteen by Metropolitan Anthimus of Ephesus. When Anthimus was elected Patriarch of Constantinople in 1845, Dn. Agathangelos accompanied him to Constantinople as the secondary to the deacons in the patriarchate. In 1847, Dn. Agathangelos was raised to the dignity of grand deacon. In May 1848, he was elected the metropolitan of the Diocese of Svornikio, succeeding Metropolitan Paisius, who had been transferred to the Diocese of Ganos and Chora.

As metropolitan of Svornikio, Metr. Agathangelos served a diocese of Slavic speaking Orthodox Christians whom he had gained their sincere respect. In May 1861, Metr. Agathangelos was transferred to the Diocese of Drama, succeeding Metr. Meletius who had been deposed. On May 25, 1872, Metr. Agathangelos was elected by the Holy Synod as metropolitan of Ephesus. He again succeeded a hierarch who had by deposed, this time Metr. Paisius of Ephesus who had been deposed by Patr. Anthimus VI. During his tenure at Ephesus, Metr. Agathangelos served as a member of the Holy Synod many times as his administrative experience and prudence were greatly appreciated. Also, during this period, he twice served as locum tenens of the ecumenical throne, first after the death of Joachim II in 1878 and again after the resignation of Joachim III (Demetriades) in 1883. Metr. Agathangelos also served as trustee for Patr. Joachim II during his illness during 1878 and several times for the Theological School of Halki.

After serving the ecumenical patriarchate for 46 years, Metr. Agathangelos reposed on April 25, 1895 in Constantinople. He was buried the next day by Patr. Neophytus VIII and the members of the Holy Synod.
