* Abp Hilarion received correspondence from people who had left the Catholic [[seminary]] in Pakistan and were inquiring into Orthodoxy. He forwarded this to Fr Adrian, who asked permission to go to Pakistan to meet with them.
* First mission trip
:* Fr Adrian was met, not only by the two he expected, but by 50 people.
:* After he settled into his hotel room, he was not allowed to leave the hotel (as he is ethnically Indian) until a local member of parliament permitted him to leave for 12 hours.
:* During this time, the press reported that a priest had arrived, and more people came to see him.
:* Fr Adrian preached for two hours, about the history and praxis of Orthodoxy. He then answered many questions about Orthodoxy. After his sermon, 110 Catholics joined the Orthodox faith, followed by 74 people the next day.
:* When asking why his sermon had interested them, people responded that they were touched that Fr Adrian, an Indian, had come to preach Orthodoxy and looked on them as equals.
:* When asking why they had invited him rather than other Orthodox priests in Pakistan, people responded that they hoped to be cared for by the largest and multicultural Church, the Church of Russia.

On the 31st of March, he announced that "[o]n the 15th of March, [he] was notified in writing of [his] reception by his eminence [sic], Metropolitan Daniel of the Metropolitanate of Moscow (TOC-R). This was followed by the necessary decrees. The decrees stated that [he is] a Hieromonk of Metropolitan Daniel's diocese, resident in the United Kingdom". This reception means the departure of Hieromonk Michael and St Petroc Monastery from the Church.

In view of his vioations of the canons by disrespect of the person of the Patriarch and other members of the Hierarchy, lengthy absences from his parish in Hobart, Tasmania, causing spiritual neglect of the faithful of his church community, and the constant inflammatory and unedifying negative comments which he publicly broadcasts within the religious media, bringing disrepute to the Orthodox witness of the Western Rite movement, Hieromonk Michael (Mansbridge-Wood), cleric of the Australia and New Zealand Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, is hereby suspended and relieved of all his priestly duties and obligations concerning the Western Rite in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, and is retired from active service in the Church. Given the above, any and all blessings for his websites are hereby withdrawn.

FYI
a) the building where St Dyfan (40 Alexander St, Sandy Bay) was based was been sold by the University of Tasmania some time ago and so doesn't exist. Also Fr Michael has not been an accredited chaplain there for some considerable time. So stricly speaking Saint Petroc Monastery (an apartment chapel) in McRobies Road, South Hobart is now and has been the only physical manifestation of SPM.

b) but to add complexity, there is another ROCOR priest Fr Barry Jefferies who has also conducted services at SPM at various times, and may continue to do so because he hasn't been suspended. So I'm not sure that the comment "This means that the monastery's lone monk can no longer celebrate services." is strictly correct.

Sorry to burden you with complexity--nothing about SPM seems straightforward.

:Regarding (a) - I think this has been addressed by the article's most recent edit; and regarding (b), Fr Barry is a married priest (and therefore not a monk). And of course, Fr Barry can't be an attached to a greater SPM movement because this movement probably doesn't exist anymore (given that the ukase you cited has removed the head without replacement) - if Fr Michael was a priest of the Diocese of ANZ (as per ukase), then ISTM that Fr Barry unquestionably is.

Yes, I think it is if you're happy. Perhaps they might even be the final words about SPM-though one can't be certain.

Finally, again fyi Fr Michael was suspended nearly 2 years ago as well. Sometime later the suspension was lifted but with stringent restrictions on the scope of his future activies. So SPM has been on a rocky road for some time now!

4. The locality for SPM is given as “Cascades”. This is not strictly correct because there is no such suburb, and “Cascades” does not appear on the Australia Post list of postcodes. “Cascades’ is used loosely by locals to describe the general area below Mt Wellington in Hobart. SPM is located in McRobies Road, “South Hobart” with postcode 7000

Using the past tense for the latest changes to the SPM page may be a little premature.

His "leaving ROCOR" letter says that the "Hobart mission" will continue to be viable even without him. The only physical manifestation of SPM is now the flat in South Hobart which apparently will remain active.

Again there is nothing straightforward about SPM!

The [[primate]] was His Beatitude, Metropolitan [[Christopher (Pulets) of Prague|Christopher of Prague]] and the Czech Lands and Slovakia, who was elected on [[May 2]], 2006 until his resignation on April 12, 2013. Archbishop Simeon (Jakovljević) is currently the locum tenens until the election of a new primate is held.

==History==
The Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia presents both an ancient history as well as a very modern history. The present day church occupies the land of Moravia, where the brothers Ss. [[Cyril and Methodius]] began their mission to the Slavs, introducing the liturgical and canonical order of the [[Orthodox Church]], translated into the [[Church Slavonic]] language. In doing this they developed the first Slavic alphabet. This mission was destroyed after Methodius died in 885, as Pope [[Stephen V of Rome]] forced all disciples of the brothers to leave the countryside which is now the Czech Republic. The Orthodox order survived in present day Slovakia due to its nearness and influence to Kievan Russia until the union with Rome was instituted by the Viennese Court.

After the legal restraints to Orthodoxy were removed with the end of World War I, many people left the [[Roman Catholic Church]]. Many looked to the [[Church of Serbia|Serbian Orthodox Church]] as parts of the Serbian church had been within the pre-war union. Among those seeking the Orthodox church was a Roman Catholic priest, Matthias Pavlik, who had been interested in Orthodox Christianity for years. The [[Church of Serbia]] thus consented to [[consecration of a bishop|consecrate]] Fr. Matthias as a bishop of the Orthodox Church with the name [[Gorazd (Pavlik) of Prague|Gorazd]].

On [[September 25]], 1921, Archimandrite Gorazd was consecrated [[Bishop]] of Moravia and Silesia at the Cathedral of the Holy Archangel Michael in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, by [[Patriarch]] Dimitri of Serbia. Bp. Gorazd (Pavlik) is considered to be in the succession from Archbishop Methodius of Moravia and bears the name of one of St. Methodius's disciples and successor, Bp. Gorazd.

As the Orthodox leader in the new nation of Czechoslovakia, Bp. Gorazd laid the foundations of the Orthodox Church throughout Bohemia, Moravia, and into Slovakia. In Bohemia, he oversaw the building of eleven churches and two chapels. He also published the essential books for the conduct of church services that were translated in the Czech language. He provided aid to those in Slovakia and Subcarpathian Russia which then were part of Czechoslovakia, and who wanted to return to their ancestral Orthodox faith from the [[Unia]]. Thus, in the interbellum period, Bp. Gorazd built the small Czech church that during World War II would show how firmly it was connected to the Czech nation.

As Hitler and his Nazis swept through Europe, a harsh rule descended on each nation. Czechoslovakia was no different as it suffered under the rule of Hitler's heir apparent, Reichsprotector Reinhard Heydrich. After the [[May 27]], 1942, assassination attack on Heydrich's car near the [[Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral (Prague, Czech Republic)|Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral]] in Prague, Czech patriots took refuge in the [[crypt]] of the cathedral before continuing their escape. They were aided by senior church [[laity|laymen]], who kept Bp. Gorazd informed. However, their presence was discovered by the Nazis, and on [[June 18]] the Nazis attacked their hiding place in the cathedral, killing them. The Orthodox [[priest]]s, laymen, and Bp. Gorazd were arrested and killed by firing squads on [[September 4]], 1942.

In reprisal the Nazis forbade the church to operate in Bohemia and Moravia. Churches and chapels were closed, and a rounding up of Czechs was conducted, including the whole village of Lidice, whose inhabitants were either killed or sent to forced labor camps. For the Orthodox the whole church fell under the Nazi persecution and was decimated. A total of 256 Orthodox priests and laymen were executed, and church life came to a stop.

After World War II the Orthodox Church in Czechoslovakia began its recovery without its beloved bishop. On [[December 9]], 1951, the Patriarch of Moscow granted [[autocephaly]] to the Orthodox Church of Czechoslovakia, though this action was not recognized by Constantinople, which regarded the Czechoslovakian church as being [[autonomy|autonomous]] under its authority. The Patriarch of Constantinople later granted a [[tomos]] of [[autocephaly]] on [[August 27]], 1998.

The [[martyr]]dom of Bp. Gorazd was recognized by the Serbian Orthodox Church on [[May 4]], 1961, which glorified Gorazd as a [[New Martyr]]. Subsequently, on [[August 24]], 1987, he was [[glorification|glorified]] at the Cathedral of St. Gorazd in Olomouc, Moravia.

==Administration==
After the Czech and Slovak Republics separated into independent republics in 1993, activity continued in each country as separate legal entities: in the Czech Republic as the '''Orthodox Church in the Czech Lands''' and in the Slovak Republic as the '''Orthodox Church in Slovakia''', but canonical unity was maintained as the '''Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia'''. The church is now organized into four [[eparchy|eparchies]] divided into two administrative centers: the Metropolitan Council for the Czech Republic resident in Prague and the Metropolitan Council for the Slovak Republic in Presov. Under the Council in Prague are the eparchies of Prague and Olomouc-Brno, while the eparchies of Presov, and Michalovce are under the Council for Slovakia.

After the repose of His Beatitude, [[Metropolitan]] [[Dorotheus (Filipp) of Prague|Dorotheus]] of Prague and All Czechoslovakia, [[Archbishop]] Nicholas of Presov was elected the new metropolitan, and the church's primatial see was moved from Prague to Presov. Metr. Nicholas reposed on [[January 30]], 2006, and was replaced by Archbishop Christopher of Prague and the Czech Lands (elected [[May 2]], 2006). Metr. Christopher resigned in April 2013 amidst allegations of wrongdoings, and the present ''locum tenens'' is Abp [[Simeon (Jakovljević) of Brno and Olomouc|Simeon of Brno and Olomouc]], the senior bishop of the Church.

In the Czech Republic, there are 82 [[parish]]es, with 51 in Bohemia and 31 in Moravia and Silesia. In the Republic of Slovakia, there are 69 parishes in the [[eparchy]] of Presov and 21 in the eparchy of Michalovce. The Orthodox Theological Faculty of the University of Presov provides an education for future [[priest]]s of the combined Church. The faculty maintains a detached branch in Olomouc.

In 1997, the monastery was received into [[Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia|ROCOR]], under the omophorion of Archbishop [[Hilarion (Kapral) of Sydney|Hilarion of Sydney]], [[Diocese of Australia and New Zealand (ROCOR)|Australia and New Zealand]], with the mandate to not only continue using the Sarum practise of the [[Western Rite]], but to do so with the explicit intent of attracting people of Anglo-Celtic ancestry to Orthodoxy through this rite. The Monastery also received permission to create attached monastery missions and parishes. In 1998, the monastery began one of these attached missions in Launceston, named for St Stephen. In 2001, Fr Michael becomes a [[chaplain]] at the University of Tasmania; though this service concludes after the University of Tasmania sells their faith centre.

In 2003, the Saint Colman Prayer Book, compiled by the monastery, is authorised for use in ROCOR. In June of the next year, the Monastery calls a meeting of Western Rite clergy in Australia and New Zealand - which included the priests attached to the monastery and two [[Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, New Zealand, and All Oceania|Antiochian]] clergy - to discuss the future of Western Rite in Australasia.

In 2013, Hieromonk Michael is suspended and retired by Metropolitan [[Hilarion (Kapral) of New York|Hilarion]] due to canon violations, neglect (through absence) of St Dyfan's parish in Hobart, and "bringing disrepute to the Orthodox witness of the Western Rite movement" through his online interactions. This means that the monastery's lone monk can no longer celebrate services. It is not totally certain what this means for the future of the monastery.

In 1997, the monastery was received into [[Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia|ROCOR]], under the omophorion of Archbishop [[Hilarion (Kapral) of Sydney|Hilarion of Sydney]], [[Diocese of Australia and New Zealand (ROCOR)|Australia and New Zealand]], with the mandate to not only continue using the Sarum practise of the [[Western Rite]], but to do so with the explicit intent of attracting people of Anglo-Celtic ancestry to Orthodoxy through this rite. The Monastery also received permission to create attached monastery missions and parishes. In 1998, the monastery began one of these attached missions in Launceston, named for St Stephen. In 2001, Fr Michael becomes a [[chaplain]] at the University of Tasmania.

In 2003, the Saint Colman Prayer Book, compiled by the monastery, is authorised for use in ROCOR. In June of the next year, the Monastery calls a meeting of Western Rite clergy in Australia and New Zealand - which included the priests attached to the monastery and two [[Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, New Zealand, and All Oceania|Antiochian]] clergy - to discuss the future of Western Rite in Australasia.

In 2013, Hieromonk Michael is suspended and retired by Metropolitan [[Hilarion (Kapral) of New York|Hilarion]] due to canon violations, neglect (through absence) of St Dyfan's parish in Hobart, and "bringing disrepute to the Orthodox witness of the Western Rite movement" through his online interactions. This means that the monastery's lone monk can no longer celebrate services. It is not totally certain what this means for the future of the monastery.

Father Ephraim doesn't have a surname...no one which is a monk has a surname.What happens is they have a first name only(which is a name of an otrhodox Saint)and if he is an elder father(spiritual father responsible for a monastery) then he uses the name of that monastery in order to show that he comes from there....in the example of Father Ephraim, because he comes from Philotheou Monastery(in mount of Athos-Greece) then he is called as "Father Ephraim the Philotheitis)which means Father Ephraim from Philotheou monastery.

Some simply have their preferred name as their ecclesiastical name; some officially change their name based on the name of their monastery (eg Abbot [[Stephanos (Pantanassiotis)]] and his monks are all officially surnamed 'Pantanassiotis'). The only exception I can think of is Hieromonk Damascene, who appears to have officially changed his name so that Hieromonk appears to be, officially, his first name. Of course, the fact that I remember specific cases tells you how common that practise is...

Reginos' point is well taken. Of course, he is correct. However, it is common to use the surname to identify a monastic more precisely -- perhaps there are a number of people with the same name from a particular monastery, even if they are separated by generations. This is why we usually try to add the surname here - just for identification/record-keeping purposes. But also we add it in parentheses to make clear that this is no longer their name according to the Church. The same goes for bishops. {{User:FrJohn/sig}}

Elder Ephraim was born in 1927 in Volos, Greece, with a [[baptism]]al name of John. He grew up in poverty and helped his father at work, but always tried to emulate the pious life of his mother (whom he later tonsured a [[nun]] with the name of Theophano). He began to desire the monastic life around 14 years of age, but he did not get a blessing from his spiritual father to leave and become a [[monk]] until he was 19.

==Monastic life==
When he arrived at Mount Athos, he became a disciple of Elder [[Joseph the Hesychast]] who [[tonsure]]d him in 1948 and gave him the name Ephraim. Elder Ephraim was subsequently [[ordination|ordained]] a [[deacon]], and then a [[priest]]. The life in the brotherhood under Elder Joseph was very austere and [[asceticism|ascetical]], and Elder Ephraim made great spiritual progress under his holy Elder. After Elder Joseph's repose in 1959, Elder Ephraim continued to live in asceticism for many years until he became the abbot of the Holy Monastery of Philotheou in 1973, where he was able to revive the spiritual life there in a short time. Due to the reputation of Elder Ephraim, the monastery's brotherhood grew rapidly. Elder Ephraim was asked by the council of Mount Athos to revive and expand several other monasteries on Mount Athos which had a dwindling number of monks. These monasteries were [[Xeropotamou Monastery (Athos)|Xeropotamou]], [[Konstamonitou Monastery (Athos)|Konstamonitou]], and [[Karakalou Monastery (Athos)|Karakallou]]. He was also asked to repopulate the [[Great Lavra (Athos)|Great Lavra]] but declined. These monasteries are still under his spiritual guidance today. The Churches & Communities under this Metropolis are independent and not part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. However they are part of the Holy Synod Of the Church of Greece (Patristic Calendar), who are registered & recognised as an Orthodox ecclesiastical church body by the Greek Government. Headed by His Beatitude Archbishop Serapheim, his representative here elected by the Holy Synod is Metropolitan Christodoulos of Neon Patron. By decree and issuing of a TOMOS by the Holy Synod in Greece (Protocol no. 134 31/1/2012) the newly formed Metropolis & Parishes in Australia under 'economia' are allowed to follow the Gregorian calendar, with some new parishes also being established which will follow the Julian Calendar. There are also also parishes & communities of the Metropolis in Victoria & South Australia.
