My name is Jim Lucas. I chair the Greek Historical Society of the San Francisco Bay Area, a 501c3 non-profit corporation based at Annunciation Cathedral in San Francisco. I am a local Greek community historian and am currently writing a book called "The Greeks of San Francisco." I have also written historical articles which have been published on various web sites. Much of our historical material can be found at sanfranciscogreeks.com, a web site I am developing. There is dedicated space for the historical society.

I am also the webmaster for Annunciation Cathedral, www.annunciation.org. I am redesigning their site. I would like to write an article regarding the Cathedral plus other historical articles.

My search for God started with the Chabad-Lubavitch in my mid teens, I was baptised an Anglo-Catholic at 23 and eventually became Orthodox in 2003.

My specific interests include: hagiography, particularly the women saints of western Europe; female monasticism; folklore and customs; ecclesiastical needlework and possible alternative forms of the "religious life" within Orthodoxy.

The number fifty, as in the fiftieth day after Pascha, stands for eternal and heavenly fulfillment, seven times seven, plus one.

==Feast of Pentecost==
The Orthodox Church sees Pentecost as the final fulfillment of the mission of [[Jesus Christ]] and the first beginning of the messianic age of the Kingdom of God, mystically present in his Church. It is traditionally called the beginning of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Besides celebrating the coming of the Holy Spirit, the feast also celebrates the full revelation of the divine [[Trinity]], Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Hymns of the Church, celebrate the sign of the final act of [[God]]'s self-disclosure to the world of His creation.

To Orthodox Christians, the feast of Pentecost is not just a celebration of an event in history. It is also a celebration their membership in the Church. They have lived Pentecost and received "the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit" in the [[sacrament]] of [[chrismation]].

==Celebration of the feast==

For the feast of Pentecost the icon of the Holy Trinity, the three angelic figures who appeared to Abraham, is placed in the center of the church for veneration. This icon is used with the traditional Pentecost icon. The church building is decorated with flowers and the green leaves of the summer to show that God's divine breath comes to renew all creation. Green vestments and coverings are also used.

In many parishes the feast is celebrated starting the evening before with [[Great Vespers]]. Some parishes also serve [[Matins]] on the morning of the feast before the [[Divine Liturgy]].

The Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom with special hymns replacing the standard [[Antiphon]]s. The hymns ''O Heavenly King'' and ''We have seen the True Light'' are sung for the first time since Easter, calling the Holy Spirit to "come and abide in us," and proclaiming that "we have received the heavenly Spirit."

The Great Vespers of Pentecost (Sunday) evening features three long prayers at which the faithful kneel for the first time since Pascha. Many smaller parishes have this service immediately following the liturgy.

The Monday after Pentecost is the '''Feast of the Holy Spirit''' in the Orthodox Church, and the Sunday after Pentecost is the [[Pentecostarion#Sunday_of_All_Saints|Feast of All Saints]].

I am a relatively new convert to Orthodoxy, having been chrismated on Lazurus Saturday, 2011. I attend St. Mark Orthodox Church in Rochester Hills, MI where I sing in the choir and read as often as I am given the opportunity. It has been a blessing to me over the past few years to have the OrthodoxWiki available to not only find answers to specific questions, but also as a storehouse of related knowledge where I have spent more than a few happy hours just following links.

I am by no means qualified to contribute content, but I have been a software engineer for the better part of the last 25 years and it would be my blessing to help out with the 'grunt work' of patching up dead links, importing graphics, or any of the myriad other duties that could help free up those who can author content.

Christos Anesti ......We are Orthodox Christians and we visited Yeronda over 7 years ago. We visit Saxinburge and are blessed to have Yerondisa in our lives as unworthy as we are. We have been blessed with 3 wonderful children and have been married for 15 years. We have been blessed with many trials that our Panagia has helped us overcome with the love of Christ our God. We would be overwhelmed to be able to communicate with your Monistary and receive advise from our Yeronda. If you will please consider having the blessing come upon us we will be very thankful. We have our second son that has special needs and Yeronda had seen Theododas when we visited and told me that prayer and fasting would allow my prayers to be heard. We fast for all the feast days, every Wednesday , Friday, and Saturday when preparing for the Holy Gifts. Please ask if he wants me to extend my fast indefinitly. I will try my best . The '''Hexapsalmos''' (or '''Six Psalms''') are a group of six [[psalm]]s composed of two triads, beginning with Psalm 3, 37, 62 and ending with Psalm 87, 102, 142, read during the [[Matins]] service. These are read after the dismissal of the [[Midnight Office]] at the beginning of the [[Matins]] service. Traditionally, they are read by the [[bishop]] or [[superior]] of the community, who may elect to delegate them to a reader.

There is a tradition that the duration it takes to read the Hexapsalmos is the time will take for [[Christ]] to judge all of humanity at the [[Last Judgment]]. If a monk walks into church as the Hexapsalmos is read, he is expected to stop where he is and not move until the entire reading has been completed.

If Matins is aggregated with other services, the beginning of Matins may be performed quietly by the [[clergy]] during the Hexapsalmos.

The Hexapsalmos are never omitted except during [[Bright Week]] and on the [[apodosis|leave-taking]] of [[Pascha]].
