Hi father john, it is with much sadness and hurt that I see you close down Orthodox Source. Mainly because I invested a huge amount of time to put information onto that site that took a lot of my time and I dont have access to any more. I am a bit saddened because you didnt even give me some notice that you were going to close the site down so that I could at least download some of the information onto my personal computer that I can access in the future ... a bit disappointed that this was not considered and an opportunity given to do this. Father John, I bought a CD last night that in Greek is called "Kataniktika of Great lent". So, I set about doing a google today to find out just what are these hymns (although I understand the words). Many articles come up but they are primarily from the Catholic church and are seven Psalms ... these do not seem to be the format of the kataniktiko service. Can you help me. What are the Kataniktika of Great Lent? I want to post an article onto OrthodoxWiki for others to reference too.!! Thanks in advance. ==User Creation - Proposal==
Greetings Fr. John,
With the amount of Vandalism we have, I propose that anyone requesting a new account first has to submit a request online, with some brief info about temselves, and THEN THE REQUEST WILL REQUIRE APPROVAL by yourself or Fr. Andrew or other Sysops. The ability for anyone to automatically create accounts will be disabled, unless they are sincere and simply request a free account which they can then of course have; I think that the Conservapedia and some other wikis might have this system in place. Anyhow, just an idea I wanted to pass along :)

By the way, regarding the note immediately above this one (in greek), it reads something like this: "I require information on an ancient heresy, called "Aftharto-Docetism"?, and its proponent was the Bishop of Halicarnassos Julianos." I see that it was an unsigned comment however.
User Creation - Proposal

Eddieuny:

The Anglican Communion is a confederation of national churches, each considered independent, yet sharing full communion with one another and the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is the spiritual (although not administrative) head of the Communion. The Anglican Communion maintains the traditional three-fold hierarchy of clergy: Bishops, Priests and Deacons. In some member churches, women have been admitted to one or more of these orders, whereas some member churches have maintained an all-male clergy. Beyond the three-fold order the administration and leadership of each national church is decided by that particular church. In the Church of England, for example, the Queen appoints Bishops. In the Episcopal Church (USA), on the other hand, bishops are elected by diocese and then confirmed by the triennial General Convention, or standing committees of advice in the majority of the diocese (depending on when a bishop-elect is chosen by a diocese).

Of particular interest to Orthodox inquirers is the current Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Reverend and Right Honorable Rowan Williams, formerly Archbishop of Wales. Dr. Williams, an academic, has written two books on the spirituality of iconography (The Dwelling of the Light: Praying With Icons of Christ and Ponder These Things: Praying With Icons of the Virgin) and did his doctoral thesis on the theology of Orthodox theologian Vladimir Lossky.

Other major thinkers to come out of the Anglican Communion have been reformers John and Charles Wesley, convert to Roman Catholicism Cardinal John Henry Newman, social activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and authors Dorothy Sayers and C. S. Lewis.

Anglican Theology
Within Anglicanism there is a wide variety of theological thought. Some Anglicans would be comfortable under the general heading of "Protestant" whereas others would shun this title in favor of "Anglo-Catholic." In actuality, Anglicanism has had a remarkable ability to hold together people of varying views on many theological issues, some of them quite major. Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia, himself a convert to Orthodoxy from Anglicanism, writes in The Orthodox Church that "There are individual Anglicans whose faith is virtually indistinguishable from that of an Orthodox; but there are others within the Anglican communion, on the extreme liberal wing, who openly repudiate fundamental elements in the doctrinal and moral teaching of Christianity" (p. 321).

Among the more "orthodox" or conservative Anglican voices have been author and apologist C. S. Lewis and Archbishop of Canterbury Michael Ramsey. On the other hand, Anglicanism has been the home of such extreme liberal theologians as Bishop John Spong, author of Why Christianity Must Change or Die.

All this being noted, however, there are a few things that can be said in a general way about Anglican beliefs.

First, Anglican doctrine in summed up in "the three historic creeds": The Nicene, The Apostles' ("The Roman Symbol") and the Athanasian Creed (or "Creed of St. Athanasius "). On advice from the Anglican-Orthodox Joint Doctrinal Commission, some national Churches have dropped the Filioque from the Nicene Creed in their liturgies, while others have not. The Church of England, for instance, maintains it in general, but it can be removed on occasions of ecumenical significance (such was the case at the entrhonement of Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury).

Second, the major doctrinal statement of Anglicanism has historically been the 39 Articles. A product of the English Reformation, the Articles are no longer binding on Anglicans, though many traditionalists hold very firmly to them. These, among other things, affirm a belief in the Trinity, the Incarnation and the Resurrection of Christ. Protestant influence on the articles led to the inclusion of Article VI: "Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man..." This same article, however, contains certain Old Testament books that were rejected by most Protestants at the Reformation, namely the deuterocanonical or "apocryphal" books. Calvinist influences can also be read in the Articles.

Unlike other Protestant bodies, Anglicanism has also maintained belief in the historic seven Sacraments as understood by the Western Church: Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Penance, Holy Orders, Matrimony and Unction. However, the 39 Articles make the distinction between "two Sacraments ordained of Christ our Lord in the Gospel" (Baptism and Eucharist) and the other five, which it does not consider necessary.

A traditional means of explaining the way that Anglicans do theology has been called the "Three-Legged Stool". In this approach, Scripture, tradition and reason are the three ways in which Anglicans come to an understanding of the Truth. Classically, Anglicans would explain that Scripture is the prime authority, best interpreted in light of Christian tradition, in a reasonable way. However, the Anglican-Orthodox Joint Doctrinal Commission has stated, "We agree likewise in our view of the fundamental relationship between Scripture and tradition: they are not two sources, but correlative." (article 91)

History
Christianity reached England by the middle of the second century. As St. Bede relates in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, in 156 a British King by the name of Lucius wrote to Eleutherus, bishop of Rome, asking to be made a Christian. (Bk 1, Chap 4) With the work of missionaries throughout the first few centuries AD, Christianity spread and took root.

In 596 Pope Gregory the Great decided to send a mission to the Anglo-Saxons in the British Isles. He chose a to send a group of Benedictine monks, under the leadership of St. Augustine of Canterbury (not to be confused with Augustine of Hippo). Augustine and his fellow monks arrived in Kent in 597 and eventually a see city was set up in Canterbury, Augustine being the first Archbishop. It is said that that when they arrived they were "carrying a silver cross and an image of Jesus Christ painted on a board, which thus became, so far as we know, 'Canterbury's first icon.'" (Lesser Feasts and Fasts p. 252)

With Augustine and those who came after him, the British Isles were slowly put under the authority of the Church of Rome. As with the rest of the Western Church, this authority increased over the next 500 years.

In the 16th century, as Western Continental Europe was struggling with the Protestant Reformation, the winds of change would eventually sweep England as well. However, as the Continental Reformation would begin in matters of religion and lead to matters of politics, the English Reformation would begin in matters of politics and end in matters of faith.

stub

Member Churches
The national churches below are all self-governing members of the Anglican Communion. There are Anglicans in other countries, however. In these cases, the parishes are under the jurisdiction of one of the national churches. The "Primates" (head bishops) of each national church meet periodically to discuss matters of faith and discipline. In addition, every 10 years (1988, 1998, etc.) the Anglican bishops from around the world are gathered to Lambeth Palace (home of the Archbishop of Canterbury) for the "Lambeth Conference." The decisions of the Lambeth Conference are seen as advisory, not binding, on the member churches.
Anglican Schisms
Several times throughout the history of Anglicanism, there have been movements which led to schism. The various resulting bodies have maintained their Anglican heritage to differing degrees. Among these groups are the various Methodist churches, the Reformed Episcopal Church, the Anglican Catholic Church and the Anglican Church in America. Current debates within the Communion regarding the ordination of homosexuals and the church's blessing of same-sex unions threaten further schism.

Relationship with Orthodox Christians
Anglican/Orthodox Organizations
Largely through the initiative and work of Oxford Movement figure Father John Mason Neale, in 1863 there was formed the Anglican and Eastern Churches Association. This organization publishes a journal (Eastern Churches News Letter)and encourages interaction of Anglican and Orthodox Christians, particularly through encouraging pilgrimages. In 1928 an organization with similar goals, the Fellowship of St. Alban and St. Sergius was formed and also publishes a journal (Sobornost). In the 1960s an international commission of Orthodox and Anglican clergy and theologians entitled the Anglican-Orthodox Joint Doctrinal Commission was formed and has issued two historic statements which will be addressed below.

Agreed Statements
In the 1960s, largely through the ecumenical work of Archbishop of Canterbury Michael Ramsey and Patriarch Athenagoras (Spyrou) I of Constantinople, both the Anglican Communion and the Orthodox Churches established commissions to consider Anglican-Orthodox relations. Between 1973 and 1976 an "Anglican-Orthodox Joint Doctrinal Commission" met which led to the Moscow Agreed Statement which dealt with "the Knowledge of God, the Inspiration and Authority of Holy Scripture, Scripture and Tradition, the Authority of the Councils, the Filioque Clause, the Church as the Eucharistic Community, and the Invocation of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharist."

In 1984 the Commission again produced a joint docrinal work entitled the Dublin Agreed Statement. This one dealt with the Mystery of the Church, the Holy Trinity and worship and tradition.

It is the goal of the Commission to put together another report in 2006, which will include the all of the interim agreements that have been reached since 1989.

At the time of the first agreed statement, the hope of the Commission had been for the eventual reunion of the Anglican and Orthodox Churches. However, in between the two, a major development in Anglicanism changed the direction of the Commission. In 1978 both the Episcopal Church U.S.A. and the Lambeth Conference put forth positions accepting the ordination of women. This drastically changed the understanding of the Commission. Following the Lambeth Conference in 1978, it had now come to be seen, in the words of co-chairman Archbishop Athanagoras, "simply as an academic and informative exercise, and no longer as an ecclesial endeavour aiming at the union of the two churches."

As there is much theological variation within Anglicanism, Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia has explained rightly when he writes, "The Orthodox Church, however deep its longing for reunion, cannot enter into closer relations with the Anglican communion until Anglicans themeselves are clearer about their own beliefs" (Ware, p. 321).

Eddieuny: Bishops in the ECUSA are confirmed either in General Convention, or by the standing committee of a majority of the dioceses.

Protestan influence on the articles led to the inclusion of Article VI: "Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man..." This same article, however, contains certain Old Testament books that were rejected by most Protestants at the Reformation, namely the deuterocanonical or "apocryphal" books.

Question on Images
I haven't tried yet, but I want to add some images. Do these have to be uploaded from a file on my computer, or can they be imported (provided they're in public domain) from another website? - Joffridus

:Okay, now I'm even more confused than I was before. What if it's, say, a photo that was sent out as part of a news release? (I am thinking particularly of a photograph of the Archbishop of Canterbury with the Ecumenical Patriarch that was sent out by the Anglican Communion News Service.)

::The best thing would be to write to ACN and ask permission for posting their photo with credit given, and include our URL. Generally speaking, it's considered rude to "hotlink" to photos on other sites since it eats up other folks precious bandwidth. Practically, this wouldn't really be a problem on a low-traffic site like this one, but nevertheless it's not best practice. (I can also make the pages load more slowly). [[User:FrJohn|Fr. == Triodion Follow up ==
By the way, The Lenten Triodion translated by Bishop Kallistos and Mother Maria is not a complete translation of the Triodion. It includes only the core services -- some Saturdays, all Sundays, and Holy Week. There is a supplemental text that looks like it was published on a mimeograph machine (texts also translated by Bishop Kallistos and Mother Maria) containing all the services for every day of the pre-Lent, Lent, and Holy Week periods that are not included in the work cited above. It is available but hard to find. This source says they have it (follow the link and search on triodion).
Titles
It would be nice to have each title or commemoration redirect to the Saint commemoration page so that each could be explained by someone with that expertise. I haven't the slightest idea why some saints merit the titles of "Equal of the Apostles" or "righteous" or "God-bearing" or "venerable," and I am hoping someone will (ahem) explain them to me. The first time I saw "God-bearing" I thought it was a typo for "God-fearing." I see OrthodoxWiki as a long-term, long-standing project which could benefit from extensive cross-referencing. So in this regard, and as there is nothing (yet) against it in the Style Manual, I stand behind my links. Additionally, I would like some clarification in how the names in the Church Calendar entries should be listed: the "Saint commemoration" page way, or simply names, or based on a particular synaxarion? --magda 20:17, 26 Feb 2005 (CST)
Another Images Question
Rdr. Andrew, I've noticed a difference in the way orthodoxwiki and wikipedia handle images, and I was hoping to (help) figure out how to get the frame-and-caption to work on an image when it is smaller or thumbnailed. Here is the wikipedia page illustrating that it does work there (specifically the last paragraph of that section). Perhaps you have an idea of how to persuade the orthodoxwiki site to cooperate? (Or maybe this is simply an issue unique to me, though it occurs both at work and at home.) I was trying to get it to work for the Isidore of Chios page, although it would be nice to have it working for the daily commemorations on the front page, too. Humbly yours, magda 10:11, 14 May 2005 (CDT)

Well, I sort of compromised on the Isidore of Chios page. I'd like to be able to both specify a size and have the caption. Where the size is specified, even though there's a caption in the image square brackets, the caption does not appear. --magda 22:40, 14 May 2005 (CDT)

I didn't realize "thumb" and the pixel specification were to be used in conjunction in order to make the caption appear. Thanks for your help in understanding that! On the Help wanted page, for the Church calendar, the image tag includes "100px," but neither "frame" nor "thumb." When creating the daily templates, trying to get the caption to appear using those two attributes, the size and alignment of the image make unintended changes. For example: for the Template:May_14 page, adding "thumb" before "100px" adds the caption and the picture appears at the correct size, but the text is no longer in line with the picture; adding "frame" does not let the size of the image to be controlled; adding both "thumb" and "frame" gives the same result as simply adding "frame." Is there a particular order to be used, or another specification to make so that the caption will show up without effecting other changes? --magda 20:30, 15 May 2005 (CDT)

Featured
Just a reminder that the Ephrem the Syrian article only had about three days as the featured article before Pascha. I don't know whether it would be better to add this to the queue again, or just leave it. I did not add this article to the "Recently Featured" paragraph at the bottom of the page, and left it as the "Current article" on the related talk page. (I added the "current article" section because I thought that if the current featured article already had a link on the talk page, it would be easier to update the talk page.) I also did not add the "Featured Articles" category to the Pascha page.

I like the idea of having Resurrection-related articles for the next features. Did you have anything in particular in mind? The Pentecost article looks like it could use some work, too. --magda 11:46, 25 May 2005 (CDT)

History
The OCA began with the missionary work of the Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. In 1917, the Bolshevik Revolution brought communication between the churches in North America and Russia to an almost complete halt. In the early 1920s, Patriarch Tikhon of Moscow directed all Russian Orthodox churches outside of Russia to govern themselves autonomously until regular communication and travel could be resumed. (He died in 1925, and was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1989.) At that time, parishes which had been part of a single North American diocese organized separate dioceses and placed themselves under various other mother churches, giving rise to the current situation of multiple overlapping jurisdictions in North America.

In the early 1960s, the Metropolia (as it was then known) resumed communication with the Patriarch of Moscow, and in 1970 full communion was restored. At that time, the Patriarch of Moscow officially granted the OCA autocephaly, or self-governing administrative status. The OCA's autocephaly is not currently recognized by all other autocephalous Orthodox Churches, including the Church of Constantinople. Churches that do recognize its autocephaly include the Church of Russia, the Church of Bulgaria, the Church of Poland, the Church of Georgia, and the Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia.

The OCA Today
In the United States, there are 11 dioceses and 623 parishes, missions, and institutions (456 of which are parishes). The ethnic dioceses extend into Canada, which also has one non-ethnic archdiocese. Altogether there are 91 Canadian parishes. The OCA has a Mexican Exarchate with nine parishes and missions, and there are five parishes in South America. In addition, there are three parishes in Australia under the OCA’s canonical protection, two in Sydney and another near Brisbane.

There are three ethnic dioceses in the OCA: the Albanian (13 parishes), Bulgarian (16 parishes) and Romanian (59 parishes). These dioceses' geographic territory overlaps with the other dioceses of the OCA and they have under their care parishes with those ethnic associations. These dioceses are the result of smaller ethnic jurisdictions joining the OCA at some point in its history.

The OCA also has 19 monastic communities, six of which fall under the direct jurisdiction of the Metropolitan (i.e., are stavropigial). The largest of these monasteries are New Skete (Cambridge, New York) and St. Tikhon's Orthodox Monastery (South Canaan, Pennsylvania).

There are three seminaries operated by the OCA: St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary (founded 1937), St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary (founded 1938), and St. Herman's Orthodox Theological Seminary (founded 1973). All three educate seminarians from multiple Orthodox jurisdictions, including those outside North America.

The OCA is a member of the Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA).

Growth and membership figures
Altogether, estimates of OCA faithful number from about 28,000 to 115,000 to 1 million to 2 million, depending on the report cited and method used for counting. The number of new parishes founded from 1990 to 2000 increased the overall parish number by about 12%, and new membership has been fairly equally divided between new immigrants, children of existing members, and converts to the faith. Overall, according to one report the trend during that decade held the population of OCA faithful in neither increase nor decline, but remaining steady. According to another, however, that same decade saw a 13% decline.

One of the ongoing difficulties that the OCA faces today is a financial and structural one—the institutions, episcopacy and structures of the OCA largely reflect probably very inflated population estimates based on obsolete figures. Additionally, the annual dues per church member is much higher than other Orthodox jurisdictions in America, which can often make realistic estimates difficult, as parishes may not wish to report their full membership in order to avoid the high dues. There is also a perceived "precipitous decline" in OCA reported membership , and while some interpret this as simply an ongoing transition in terms of the difference between reported figures and actual figures, the church's primate has referred to the situation as a "membership crisis." A general shortage in clergy is also being cited in some reports.

According to Fr. Jonathan Ivanoff, who is on the administrative committee of the OCA's Department of Evangelization and the board of directors of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center, the OCA's American contintental membership (i.e., not including Alaska, Canada, or the ethnic dioceses) "has been declining between 6 and 9% for nearly 20 years. The OCA’s Census population in 1994 was 29,775; in 2004 it stood at 27,169." Despite these sobering figures, however, the OCA's dioceses of the West and South have both reported steady growth.

Name
According to Bishop Tikhon (Fitzgerald) of San Francisco, the name of this jurisdiction is The Orthodox Church in America, and its acronym should be TOCA. There has not yet been any official announcement from the central administration of the church, however, and the former uses (Orthodox Church in America and OCA) remain the most common both within and outside the jurisdiction.

According to the 1970 Tomos of Autocephaly granted by the Church of Russia, the official name of this church body is The Autocephalous Orthodox Church in America.
The BBC website at http://news.bbc.co.uk is reporting that Patriarch Eirenaios has been deposed in a letter signed by thirteen bishops. This apparently has to do with selling some property in the Old City of Jerusalem to a Jewish organization. Perhaps mention could be made on the news page and on the page for the Church of Jerusalem. Tks, Ed Eddieuny 22:10 UTC 5 May 2005

The Church of Japan (日本ハリストス正教会) is an autonomous Orthodox church, whose primate is confirmed by the Church of Russia.

History
St. Nicholas of Japan (baptized as Ivan Dimitrievich Kasatkin) brought Orthodoxy to Japan in the 19th Century. In 1861 he was sent by the Church of Russia to Hakodate, Hokkaido as a priest to a chapel of the Russian consulate. Though the contemporary Shogun's government prohibited the Japanese conversion to Christianity, soon some neighbors who frequently visited the chapel converted—Nicholas's first three converts in Japan. While they were his first converts in Japan, they were not the first Japanese to do so—some Japanese who had settled in Russia had converted to Orthodoxy.

Apart from brief trips, Nicholas stayed in Japan, even during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), and spread Orthodoxy nationwide, being appointed as the first bishop of Church of Japan. Nicholas founded the Cathedral of Tokyo in Kanda district and spent the majority of the last half of his life there, hence Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral was nicknamed Nikolai-do by Kanda citizens.

The early mission to establish the Japanese Orthodox Church depended on the Russian Orthodox Church, especially in financial matters. The war between Russia and Japan created a politically difficult situation for the church. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the Japanese government had new suspicions about the Japanese Orthodox Church, in particular, that it was used as a cover for communist Russian espionage. The second bishop of Japan, Metropolitan Sergii (Tikhomirov), suffered severely from such governmental suspicion, and he was forced to resign his episcopacy. The Russian Church similarly suffered from Stalinist policy and had no ability to help the young church in Japan.

During the Fifteen Years War (1930-1945), which from 1939 to 1945 was part of World War II, Christianity in Japan suffered under severe conditions, the Orthodox Church especially. After the Japanese surrender, the Allied occupation had a generous attitude to Christianity, given its predominantly American composition. As the majority of the Slavic- and Greek-Americans would attend local Orthodox parishes, Orthodoxy in Japan took a step forward. During the war, the Japanese Orthodox Church had almost no foreign contact. After the war, instead of the Russian Church, the precursors of the Orthodox Church in America helped establish the Japanese Orthodox Church, and several youth who studied at the OCA's St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in New York are now the leaders of Japanese Orthodox Church.

Later, as the situation of the Russian Orthodox Church improved, the Japanese Orthodox Church came under their leadership again. In 1970 Nikolai Kasatkin was glorified by the Patriarch of Moscow and is recognized as St. Nikolai, Apostle to Japan. His commemoration day is February 16. In 2000 the Russian Orthodox Church canonized Bishop Andronic (Nikolsky) as a saint and martyr. He was appointed the first bishop of Kyoto and later martyred as the archbishop of Permi during the Russian Revolution.
The OCA was formerly known as the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church in America, or more informally, the Metropolia.
