St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church is a parish church of the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Australia and New Zealand in Farrer, in the south of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory.[1] It is dedicated to St. Sava, the patron saint of the Serbs, and was founded by members of Canberra's Serbian community who remained with the Serbian Orthodox Church in Belgrade when the community divided in 1963.[2]
History
Serbs in Canberra
Serbian refugees from communist Yugoslavia began settling in the Canberra district in 1949. The first Orthodox service was held in 1951 at St. John's Anglican Church in Reid, and in 1955 the small community formed the Eastern Serbian Orthodox Church. In 1962 it was granted land in Forrest for a church and community hall.[2]
The 1963 division
In 1963 the community divided over church administration. The Forrest church became St. George Free Serbian Orthodox Church, while the section that remained loyal to the Serbian Orthodox Church went on to build its own church in Farrer, named after St. Sava.[2]
The church in Farrer
The St. Sava community formed the Sumadija Soccer Club, later Farrer-Serbia, in 1977. In 1979 it completed a church and hall in Farrer. The foundation stone of the present church was laid on 7 June 1981, and the church was consecrated on 14 October 1984.[2]
Reconciliation
The division of 1963 was resolved in 1992, when the Free Serbian Orthodox Church was reconciled with the Serbian Orthodox Church.[2] In 2011 the Serbian Orthodox dioceses in Australia and New Zealand were united as the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitanate of Australia and New Zealand, of which St. Sava's is a parish.[3]
