His Eminence Anthony I (Zybelin) of Kazan was Metropolitan of the Eparchy of Kazan of the Church of Russia in the late eighteenth century. He served only from 1782 to 1785 before requesting retirement.

Life

Alexei Gerasimovich Zybelin was born about the year 1730. He attended the Slavonic-Greek-Latin Academy in Moscow. After his graduation, Alexei continued to serve at the academy. During this period, Alexei married, but after his wife reposed, he was tonsured a monk with the name Anthony in 1760 and, in 1761, was ordained a hieromonk. Fr. Anthony served at the academy, first as a teacher, then in 1763 as a prefect, before he was appointed rector of the Academy on March 20, 1768. While still serving as rector he was elevated to the dignity ofarchimandrite of the Monastery of the Icon of the Savior.

On October 10, 1770, Fr. Anthony was consecrated Bishop of Arkhangelsk in the Dormition Cathedral in Moscow. On July 9, 1773, Bp. Anthony was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod, where in 1779 he established a vicariate.

In 1780, in view of the advancing age and poor physical condition of Metr. Benjamin of Kazan, Bp. Anthony was instructed to establish vicariates in Kazan and Simbirsk that later were combined in 1799 as the Eparchy of Kazan and Simbirsk. Then, on April 25, 1782, he was transferred to the see of Kazan as an archbishop, succeeding Abp. Benjamin. Abp. Anthony led the Eparchy of Kazan only a few years before he requested retirement himself. After his request was approved, Abp. Anthony moved on March 5, 1785 to the Macarius Monastery in Nizhny Novgorod, as its senior and, with a pension of 1000 rubles. He remained at the monastery until his repose on September 27, 1797.
